As a proud supporter of the Sasol Solar Challenge, Toyota Forklift is one of the sponsors of the solar-powered vehicles taking on this year’s challenge. The cars will navigate a tough and taxing route of up to 5,000 km from Pretoria to Stellenbosch – using the power of sun alone as the energy source.

Toyota Forklift is one of the suite of “best-in-class” brands supplied by Toyota Industrial Equipment, a division of the EIE Group,

More than 10 local and international teams will set off on 22 September 2018 in the eight-day challenge, in a bid to be crowned champions at a prestigious event to be held in Cape Town on 30 September 2018. The teams will compete to cover the most distance, following a specified route each day, and completing additional loops during the set hours, using their remaining power. This is the sixth biennial Challenge to be held and will also be the biggest contested to date.

Toyota Forklift’s sponsorship includes the two battery packs for one of the solar powered cars. Each battery pack is made up of 440 lithium ion cells, arranged in 22 rows of 20 cells each, to provide 72v 66ah (4,752 kWh) power.

“We are proud to be associated with an event that draws on the ingenuity and skill of  teams in designing and building the solar-powered vehicles which they then drive across South Africa – values which fit well with Toyota Forklift’s commitment to innovation and to constantly seeking out new technologies that both improve performance and reduce environmental impact,” commented Gary Neubert, EIE Group’s CEO. “With the world’s top solar car teams competing, the Sasol Solar Challenge will, without a doubt, showcase the ‘best-in-class’ in engineering, driving and, even, teamwork.

“We look forward to an exciting eight days as we follow Sonke Siyakude, the Toyota Forklift solar car, in its demanding journey across our country’s incredible landscapes – and wish the team success in this year’s event.”

As the sole distributor of Toyota Forklift, BT, Raymond and Flexi material handling equipment in Southern Africa, the EIE Group is the largest supplier of forklifts to the Southern African market and has the most comprehensive product support infrastructure in the region.
