In the first orders to be received from MSC South Africa for Konecranes trucks, Toyota Industrial Equipment, part of the EIE Group, has handed over four Konecranes Reach Stackers and four Empty Container Handlers, for deployment at the company’s depots in Durban, Cape Town and Gauteng.
The three orders from MSC South Africa, the local branch of the leading global container shipping company, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), were placed over a period from December 2018 to February 2019 and included two SMV 5/6 ECC 90 empty container handlers (ECHs) for Durban, and two SMV 6/7 ECHs for Cape Town. The handlers can lift nine tons at different heights, with the ability to sense the load and adapt the lifting power to the weight of the load. This enables MSC South Africa to position empty containers quickly for stuffing and shipping.
The order for the Gauteng depot, a new MSC South Africa operation to handle growing demand in the region, comprised four SMV 4531 TC5 reach stackers, all Smart Connected Lift Trucks equipped with the powerful TRUCONNECT Premium tool for fleet management and control of fuel costs. TRUCONNECT allows MSC South Africa to track the real usage of their new vehicles with information such as driving hours, carbon footprint, safety alerts and fuel consumption. It also provides performance data for optimal scheduling of maintenance.
The reach stackers supplied have a lifting capacity of 45 tons and feature durable, modern lifting spreaders attached to the lift boom, affording the ability to lift and slightly rotate containers, while the smart load-sensing hydraulics adapt the lifting power to the weight of the load accordingly. Maximum power will only be provided by the lifting system when it is truly needed. Excellent stability when lifting and transporting heavy containers combined with the counterweighted design for high front and rear visibility make Konecranes machines one of the safest options available.
“In order to stay strong in the market, we need to provide a competitive service with maximum efficiency,” says Ashley Bechoo, MSC Fleet Manager for South Africa. “We want equipment that not only performs well, but helps us manage and maintain our fleet, and especially monitor and control CO2 emissions and fuel costs.”
“We welcome MSC South Africa to our suite of valued Konecranes clients and look forward to a long, ever growing relationship, in line with our commitment to building partnerships for life,” says Gary Neubert, EIE Group’s CEO. “With the strongest aftermarket support in South Africa, we will continue to work closely with the MSC team to ensure maximum up time and the lowest possible business interruption costs in the deployment of their Konecranes fleet.”
